I use Yahtze to help students learn to add and work on problem solving strategies. This is a good way for students to work in cooperative groups and solve problems in order to win. My students enjoy playing this game and their math scores in addition and subtraction have gone up.

I use Scrabble as a tool to enhance my students spelling. When they are in the “spelling” center, they use the tiles to help with their spelling. The rules are: students have to make their spelling words out of the tiles. They learn the words of the week and I have seen a marked improvement in their vocabulary, spelling, and writing.

Battleship is another game that my students enjoy playing because they use their critical thinking skills to win the game. We have just started using this in my math center because it deals with problem solving.

Thank you,

Terrific suggestions!

Have you tried the new Yahtze Free for All? It just came out this fall. The inventor is Richard Borg and he has a lot of great games under his belt.

Has anyone bought this type of sling shot before that holds the amo in the handle? www.liangdianup.com/sporting_1.htm
this company has free shipping to anywhere in the world and they guarantee delivery to Australia. I heard that sling shots
are ok to sell in Australia as long as you say they are being used to toss bait in the water when you go fishing, any truth
to thatone?

Great to read Glenda!

I would second a recommendation for Yahtzee Free for All, I would also recommend a game called Pickomino - it's another dice game that has the adding element, but also has a neat probability element.

Scrabble is an excellent game for classroom use - I also use Upwords and My Word, as well as Apples to Apples as other literacy based games. Junior Apples to Apples has been very popular in my class.

Are there any other games you have used? Any tricks you have for introducing them?

Cheers,

Giles.

Being an Aussie I can't comment on the legality of slingshots, however I would suggest this forum is the place to ask about that sort of thing. There are bound to be better places out there - we are all about board and card games and classrooms!

Apples to Apples Jr is a really good game to use. It moves a quick pace and is easy to learn. Plus the answers are funny and the kids really enjoy it. I'd also suggest a game called Snorta.

www.playyourredcard.com is a good place to get a check out the regular version of Apples to Apples. It gives you a sense of what to expect from the Jr version.

www.letsplaysnorta.com gives you a feel for Snorta as well.

Hope this helps!!
